The Humane Society of Perry in partnership with the Prairie View Animal Hospital in Grimes will conduct its fifth annual low-cost rabies vaccination clinic Sunday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Perry Dog Park on W. Fifth Street south of the ball diamonds.
Recommended donations are $10 for a vaccination and $20 for microchipping, according to Abby Benifiel, director of the Humane Society of Perry.
A Perry city ordinance requires all dogs residing within the city limits to be current on their rabies shots. Dogs must receive a rabies vaccination yearly but if they are brought to a vet before the year expires, the second vaccination is good for three years.
Benifiel said the low-cost rabies clinic is the Humane Society of Perry’s most requested program. Dr. Lisa Thilges of the Prairie View Animal Hospital in Grimes “has kindly volunteered her labor so we may offer this service,” Benifiel said.
“The more animals you are helping in the community, the better,” said Thilges, who will be making her third trip to Perry for the clinic. “For a lot of folks, this is the only time they may see a vet from one year to the next,” she said.
Benifiel said 85 pets were vaccinated at last year’s clinic, and several received distemper/parvo combination vaccinations. She said four pets were microchipped, and a few were scanned to check for the presence of microchips.
“Let’s try to beat that number this year,” Benifiel said. “Please tell your friends and neighbors.”
She said vaccinations are offered on a walk-in basis only. No appointment is required. Dogs should be well controlled on a leash, and all cats must be in carriers.
