How and what should students be taught about art in the public schools?
If you have in mind some concrete answers to this question, then consider attending the public forum planned for Tuesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 27 in Johnston, where people will have an opportunity to provide input on the fine arts standards under consideration by the Iowa Department of Education.
Iowa’s Fine Arts Standards Adoption Team, which was convened by the Iowa Department of Education earlier this year, seeks broad public feedback on the National Core Arts Standards, which were developed by the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards.
A statewide series of forums is scheduled for April 25 and April 27. The feedback gathered through the forums — and an online survey through May 12 — will be used to provide guidance to the Fine Arts Standards Adoption Team, who is charged with recommending fine arts standards to the State Board of Education.
If adopted, the fine arts standards would be recommended, but not required, for Iowa school districts.
Perry-area readers will want to attend the Tuesday, April 25 or Thursday, April 27 meetings from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Heartland Area Education Agency, 6500 Corporate Dr. in Johnston.
