Ronald Helmers, 71, of Perry died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, at his home in Perry with his family by his side.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 2-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 at Carris Family Funeral Home. At the end of visitation, Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy. According to his wishes, no service is planned at this time. Memorials may be given to family and may be left at the Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent towww.carrisfuneralhome.com.

Ronald Paul Helmers was born Sept. 9, 1943, at Fort Dodge, Iowa, to John and Johanna (Leners) Helmers.

He graduated from Palmer High School in 1961. His education was furthered in the Modern School of Gunsmithing, appliance repair school and at DMACC for upholstery.

During the Vietnam War he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy.

Ronald was united in marriage to Bonita Clark July 10, 1966.

He was employed at Oscar Mayer, IBP and Tyson in the maintenance department for 40 years. He also owned Ron’s Gun Repair Shop for several years.

Ronald enjoyed woodworking, especially making children’s toys and Christmas lawn decorations. Attending his grandchildren’s events was something he took much pride in.

Ronald was preceded in death by parents, John and Johanna Helmers; and his sister, Elizabeth Arguelles.

Survivors include his wife, Bonita Helmers, of Perry; a daughter, Michelle Diw, of Perry; a son, John (Laura) Helmers, of Perry; and grandchildren, Julie Diw, Johanna Diw, Rachael Kares, Quinn Helmers and Sydney Helmers.
