Sabrina Ray died of malnutrition, autopsy concludes

Sabrina Ray of Perry, the 16-year-old girl who was tortured and starved to death in 2017, was in part a victim of dereliction of duty in the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS), according to a report on the case released Tuesday by the Iowa State Ombudsman's office.

ANKENY — The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner has released autopsy results in the May 12 death of Sabrina Ray of Perry. The 16-year-old died of malnutrition, according to the medical examiner’s report.

Preliminary autopsy results at the time of her death showed evidence of severe malnutrition. Sabrina weighed just 56 pounds when she was found in her home.

The child’s adoptive parents, Marc Ray, 41, and Misty Jo Bousman Ray, 40, were arrested May 18 in connection with the death. Carla Raye Bousman, 62, the mother of Misty Jo Bousman Ray; Justin Dale Ray, 21, the son of Marc Ray and Misty Jo Bousman Ray; and Josie Raye Bousman, 20, a niece of Misty Jo Bousman Ray, were arrested May 31.

Dallas County District Court Judge Paul Huscher has unified the five cases for trial, which is set to begin Oct. 30. Carla Bousman’s request to be released from custody for medical reasons was denied at an Aug. 11 hearing.
