Sitting is the new smoking, health experts say

Have you heard? A sit-around, I-never-exercise lifestyle is being compared to smoking as far as health risks.

What are the risks of a sedentary lifestyle?

According to Dr. James Levine, sitting for extended periods increases your risk for obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and some cancers. The Center for Disease Control reports that chronic diseases are now the number one threat to our health, much higher than infectious diseases.

In addition to parking in front of the TV or computer for hours during free time, many people sit for long stretches at work. Levine suggests breaking up this sitting by trying to stand when possible. Stand up while on a phone call. Go for a walk with a co-worker during breaks.

If possible, put your computer on a counter or other high surface so you can stand while working. If you drive for a living or travel for your job, take every opportunity to stretch and walk.

The New York Times Well blog reported that an hour of sitting is every bit unhealthy as smoking two cigarettes. If you employ others, encourage them to be less sedentary. 1. I agree 100 percent. After myself, my second worst enemy is my easy chair. My third worst was television, but I chose to unplug my one-eyed demon last October. Like Bruce Springsteen used to sing, “Forty-seven channels (around 100 these days) and nothing’s on.”
