The Spirit of Chautauqua is a traveling music show touring to 45 Iowa counties this summer, including Dallas County at Forest Park Museum in July.

The name is a tribute to the lively Chautauqua festivals that brought a world of entertainment to Iowa communities a century ago. The tour is produced by Will Schmitt and county conservation departments across the state.

Schmitt was born and raised in Winterset and for 10 years led the Midwestern rock band, Funks G. His time spent in nature has informed his songwriting and overall approach to life, and he’s excited to share the songs and stories he’s picked up along his way.

“I look forward to spending the summer exploring Iowa’s parks and am grateful to the county conservation boards for helping me put this together,” Schmitt said. “They do a wonderful job of preserving Iowa’s natural heritage and making it accessible to everyone.”

Schmitt will perform his Spirit of Chautauqua concert in Perry Sunday, July 10 at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Park Museum, 14581 K Ave. near Perry.

All Spirit of Chautauqua concerts are free of charge. CDs and a tip jar will be available for donations.

For tour dates and more information, please visit the Spirit of Chautauqua website and Schmitt’s website.  For more information about Schmitt’s Perry performance, contact Dallas County Conservation‘s Forest Park Museum Curator Pete Malmberg at 515-465-3577 or at
