William Romanowski of 1923 Otley Ave. in Perry said he hopes the storm sewer work does not kill his trees along 10th Street. Tenth Street will be closed this weekend between Willis Avenue and Evelyn Street.

Storm sewer improvements to accommodate the new Hamlin-Bell apartments will cause the closure this weekend of 10th Street between Willis Avenue to Evelyn Street, including the intersection at Otley Avenue, according to the Perry City Hall.

Residents in the affected area will be able to access their homes and their driveways, but the street will be closed to through traffic.

William Romanowski of 1923 Otley Ave. has watched progress on pipe-laying project this week.

“I hope I don’t lose my trees,” Romanowski said Thursday. “They told me they’d be fine.”

Construction began in March on the $7 million, 36-unit senior apartment complex, and the first Hamlin-Bell units are expected to be available to rent by March 2017.

The Hamlin-Bell complex won city council approval in 2013, and Perry gave the development company, Newbury Living, the Willis Avenue land for the project, the site of the former Perry High School and later used as the Perry Junior High School.

The city’s buy-in and Newbury’s partnership with the non-profit Nudgers development group helped the company win the low-income housing tax credits that are financing the construction.
