Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. is sinking $15,000 into a partnership with the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Perry VanKirk Career Academy for a three-year program in industrial maintenance.

As many as 12 students will be selected by Tyson for the program, according to the Tyson human resources department. Beginning June 5, students will take classes from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the Perry DMACC.

In the afternoons, they will work at the Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. facility in Perry from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sundays.

The starting wage is $19 per hour, and students will be paid for attending classes. In addition, a full benefit and insurance package will be available on the first Monday after two months of full-time employment.

“If you have some mechanical aptitude and would like to work for a Fortune 500 Company with great benefits, we encourage you to join us,” said Dennis Meinecke, plant engineer at Tyson Fresh Meats Inc.

Some of the topics in the industrial maintenance 1 + 2 training program include:

  • Industrial Electrical

  • Mechanical Power Transmission

During the first year, employees will take classes at the DMACC Perry Van Kirk Career Academy in the morning and work at the Tyson Perry Plant in the afternoons and on Sunday. During the second and third year, employees will be working full-time at the Tyson plant.

“We’re pleased to provide this program, which we believe will give people training and skills they need to be a successful part of our team, said Eloisa Baumgartner, human resources manager at the Tyson Fresh Meats plant in Perry.

Rick Carpenter, program development director at the Perry DMACC, said the wage-and-benefit package will attract students to this program.

“This is a great opportunity to partner with such a great company as Tyson and to enhance the great community of Perry,” said Carpenter. “We look forward to maintaining this partnership for many years to come. This program not only provides a good career option for our students but will allow DMACC to expand vocational training opportunities in Perry.”
