W-G's Payton Tague looks for running room against Mount Ayr Oct. 6. Tague rushed for touchdowns in each of two overtime periods to lift W-G to a 27-24 win over No. 7 Pleasantville Friday.

PLEASANTVILLE — Payton Tague sped around left end and dashed 10 yards into the end zone on Woodward-Granger’s first snap of double overtime Friday as the Hawks stunned seventh-ranked Pleasantville, 27-24.

Pleasantville (6-2, 4-2) led, 7-6, with less than two minutes to go when both teams suddenly found the gas pedal, with 38 of the 51 points scored in the game coming in the waning minutes of regulation and two overtime periods.

The Trojans needed only to gain another first down and then would have won the game, as W-G had only one timeout remaining, but Hunter Tyree burst 45 yards for a touchdown and a 14-6 lead for the hosts.

That meant W-G would receive the ball, and Austin Scharlau promptly returned the ensuing kickoff two yards past midfield to set up the offense.

Brendan Bird spun a perfect pass to a streaking Bryce Achenbach on the first W-G snap, with Achenbach falling into the end zone on the tackle. Payton Tague ran in the clutch two-point conversion to tie the game and force overtime.

W-G (6-2, 4-2) held a 6-0 lead at the half thanks to a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown from Cole Carmen. The hosts scored to take a 7-6 lead early in the second half, setting the stage for the late dramatics.

Prep overtime calls for each team to have a possession from the 10-yard line. W-G went on offense first, scoring on third down when Tague barreled in from six yards out. Matt Hansen’s PAT kick made it 21-14, but Pleasantville answered on their first play as Tyree scored on a sweep to tie the game at 21-all.

The Hawk defense held for three downs as Pleasantville was first with the ball in the second overtime. A field goal gave the Trojans a brief 24-21 lead, but Tague shattered Trojan hearts by turning the corner off left end and striding to pay dirt, setting off a wild celebration.

Second-ranked Pella Christian (8-0, 6-0) leads District 5 and will visit Woodward Friday. W-G is currently second at 6-2, 5-1, while Pleasantville and Interstate 35 (a 49-0 winner over Woodward Academy yesterday) are locked at 6-2, 4-2. I-35 hosts Mount Ayr Friday, with Pleasantville to visit Central Decatur.
