WOODWARD — Senior Night for five Woodward-Granger softball players turned into an offensive showcase, as the Hawks scored wins of 12-0 in three innings and of 14-3 in six frames over West Central Valley Thursday.
The WCAC twinbill was the final regular season home appearance for Miranda Aunspach, Kendra Husmann, Riley Jamison, Bree Lesch and Maggi Mallon. The two wins lifted W-G to 11-14 overall and 7-5 in conference play while WCV dropped to 4-18 and 1-12.
W-G scored seven runs in the first, three in the second and two in the third to end the first game early. Jamison allowed only two hits and struck out two in collecting the win in the ring.
The Hawks received six walks in three frames, five of them in the first. A two-run single from Kaycee Major, a RBI-groundout from Mallon, a run-scoring double from Husmann and the first of two two-run triples from Alissa Smeltzer powered the surge.
Mallon would add a single, a double and a RBI later in the game, with Jamison hitting a triple while Lesch had two hits and three stolen bases. Kayley Dresback stole four bases and Katelyn Bandstra three in the win.
Lesch had three hits, Aunspach three hits and three RBIs and Major a two-run double in the other game. Husmann had two singles, a double and a RBI, Smeltzer and Bandstra two hits each and Mallon a single to guide the team to victory.
Jamison allowed three runs on seven hits, walking one batter, hitting two and striking out two.
W-G will play twice today and twice Saturday at the University of Iowa softball complex as part of their annual two-day trip to the Clear Creek-Amana Classic. The Hawks face Class 4A No. 2 Fairfield at 1:30 p.m. and Williamsburg at 5 p.m. today, with Saturday’s slate showing a 9 a.m. contest against Tipton and a 2 p.m. game against 4A No. 9 Carlisle.
