The Woodward Academy Knights will play in State Quarter Finals basketball action next week, but one of their number, Dontre English, became a winner this week when he was named the Hy-Vee Horizon Athlete of the Week.

English, 17, a native of Denver, Colo., leads the Knights in scoring this season. He garnered the Spotlight Sports award for having “reached a high level of athleticism, while maintaining sportsmanship to its utmost degree.”

“I’ve been playing basketball half my life,” English said Friday during practice. He said he hopes to play basketball for North High School in Des Moines next year.

English said he “has college in mind” and plans to visit Wichita State University this summer. The WuShock coaching staff has been recruiting him this year, he said.

English has some talented teammates as well. Assistant Basketball Coach Shaun Mohon said the team has been “unbelievable down the stretch. We really know how to fight during the fourth quarter.”

The Woodward Academy Knights advanced to state-level action after beating the Panorama High School Panthers in sub-state play last week. They scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

The Knights will square off against the Aplington-Parkersberg Falcons Monday at 8:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
