Woodward-Granger posts 1-3 mark at Hawk Classic

WOODWARD — Two days of softball in the sunshine and heat at their own Classic left the Woodward-Granger team with a 7-8 overall mark. The hosts dropped a pair of Friday contests before splitting their Saturday contests.

Saturday began with a 10 a.m. tilt against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, with W-G winning, 12-0, in three innings.

Riley Jamison pitched the three frames for the hosts, allowing two hits while striking out two.

W-G plated six runs in the first inning, four in the second and two in the third to end the game early.

Maggi Mallon drove in two runs with a double, with Kendra Husmann smacking a single and a double while Miranda Aunspach provided three singles.

Jamison, Alissa Smeltzer, Katelyn Bandstra and Kaycee Major all had two hits, with Bree Lesch and Kayley Dresback adding singles as well. Bandstra and Aunspach each had two RBIs, with Jamison, Major, Dresback and Smeltzer also driving in runs.

Saturday’s second game found the Hawks pitted against Class 4A No. 7 Perry, who jumped to 3-0 lead on an Emma Olejniczak home run before Major launched a two-run shot of her own to trim the deficit to 3-2 after one frame.

The Perry offense was in high gear, erupting for 14 hits, most of them for extra bases. The Jayettes added a run in the second, three in the third, another in the fourth and then three more in the sixth, with the game called by time limit after W-G batted in their half of the sixth.

Jamison allowed eight runs (four earned) on 11 hits in five innings while striking out three. Eighth grader Ava Peterson pitched the sixth, yielding three runs on three hits and two walks.

Jamison, Dresback and Bandstra had two hits apiece, with Lesch adding a double and Aunspach a single. Peterson was aboard when Major homered.

Olejniczak added a double and a single and finished with three RBIs, with Rachel Kinney 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs while Alyssa Kruger was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI to highlight the Perry attack.

Sid Vancil collected the pitching win in the ring for the Jayettes, who moved to 13-4 with the win.

The Classic began on a sour note for W-G Friday with Pleasantville scoring a 12-2 win in six innings.

Jamison surrendered 12 runs (eight earned) on 13 hits and two walks in taking the loss. She finished with one strikeout.

Husmann had a RBI-double, with two singles from Lesch and an Aunspach base hit accounting for the Hawk offense. Dresback had the other RBI, with Aunspach and Natalie Weaver each scoring once.

Lewis Central scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a 3-0 deficit and stun W-G in Friday’s second game for the hosts.

Major provided a single, a double and two RBIs, with Lesch tallying two hits and scoring twice. Husmann and Bandstra each had hits, with Maddi Danti scoring the other Hawk run.

Jamison was the tough-luck loser, as only one of the four Titan runs were earned. She walked three and allowed four hits in 5-2/3 innings on the rubber.

W-G visits Des Moines Christian tonight before hosting Earlham Tuesday and then playing a doubleheader at Panorama Thursday. All four games are WCAC contests.
