Flames darted from the upper floor of the house at 402 W. Fifth St. in Woodward at 5 a.m. Sunday.

A fire broke out early Sunday morning at 402 W. Fifth St. in Woodward, bringing volunteer firefighting crews from Madrid, Bouton, Perry, Dallas Center and Granger to back up the Woodward Fire Department.

Woodward and Madrid firefighters responded to the report of a fire at the home of Barry McElhaney in Woodward shortly after 4 a.m. By 5:30 a.m. about 40 firefighters from the six departments were on the scene, along with the Woodward Police Department and Dallas County Emergency Medical Services.

Woodward Police Chief Joe Cox said flames were plentiful when fire crews arrived, but they quickly knocked them down. The one-story frame structure, built in 1900, continued to smoke and smolder in the following hours.

“There’s still smoke, and that’s not good,” said McElhaney, who escaped the blaze uninjured and remained at the scene while firefighters worked.

Daniel and Vicky Calderon, McElhaney’s neighbors to the north, said McElhaney came to their house at 4:15 a.m. and called E-911. Vicky Calderon said she was eager to see the fire completely controlled before damage was done to her property.

The fire was fully extinguished by about 7:30 a.m. ThePerryNews.com will update this story as information becomes available.
