AAU Kids State wrestling tourney set for this weekend

Youngsters take their turn on the big stage this weekend at the AAU Kids State tourney.

DES MOINES — One week after the mania of the high school state wrestling tournament, the Wells Fargo Arena will again be the site of cheers, tears and life-long memories as the AAU Kids State tourney hits the mats Saturday and Sunday.

All wrestlers competing in the event were in the top four of their grade/weight at a district qualifying meet.

The weigh-in will be held Friday between 5-8 p.m. at Southridge Mall, not at Wells Fargo Arena. Families are asked to bring their youngster to the mall entrance west of Target.

Admission is $15 per day for adults, $10 for students (ages 5-12) and is free for pre-school age children. Two-day passes are $25 and $15 and will be available at the weigh-in Friday. Additionally, Floor Passes are available for $20 each. These are for parents who wish access to the floor area (but not onto the mat) and is separate from the admission fee.A and B divisions will begin wrestling at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the C division to start at approximately 2:30 p.m. A Grand March will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, with wrestling starting at 10 a.m.

A total of 33 youngsters from Dallas County are scheduled to participate in the tourney.

Korbin Barck, Cole Nelson and Khyler Carstarphen will compete from Perry, with Avery Van Zelderen, Max Dalton, Kayden Danti, Aidan Honkomp, Ethan Mahoney, Kane Mahler-Moreno, Dustin Harney, Holden Heard, Oliver Potter, Cory Saxton (Madrid), Terrin Lawrenson (Madrid) and Alex Saxton (Madrid) representing Woodward.

Aiden Flora, Brayden Rynearson, Cooper Greenslade and Gabriel Hatchitt from Adel will be in action, as will Dallas Center youth Max Murray, Kellen Wegner, Gavyn Winters, Aidan Walsh and Colin Kakacek.

Van Meter will be represented by Konnar Stiles, Nathan Hansen, Ryan Stiles and Max Vandever, with Grayson Manning, Drake Pelton, Carew Christensen, Joey Cahill, Koufax Christensen, Tanner Spyksma and Griffin Gammell on the mats from Waukee.
