Absentee voting for school board elections starts Aug. 17

ADEL — Dallas County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Gene Krumm announced today absentee ballots for the Sept. 8 School Election can be cast in the Dallas County Auditor’s Office starting Monday, Aug. 17.

Absentee voting will occur auditor’s office at 910 Court St. in Adel from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, until Sept. 4.

Absentee ballots must be requested in writing. Request forms are available online — at the Dallas County Auditor’s website and at the Iowa Secreteray of State’s website — and in hard copy at the auditor’s office.

Ballots returned through the U.S. Postal Service must be postmarked by midnight of the last working day prior to the election. Sept. 5, or may be delivered in person to the auditor’s office before the 8 p.m. poll closing on election day.

Requests for mailed ballots must be received by the auditor by 5 p.m. Sept. 4.

Voter eligibility

In order to vote in the Regular School Election, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age, not currently judged by a court to be “incompetent to vote” and not convicted of a felony.

The deadline to register to vote is 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28.

The Dallas County Auditor’s Office will be open on Aug. 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After this date, new voters can still vote and register in the Auditor’s Office or register on Election Day at their designated polling place or vote center. The voter will be required to show proof of residency and identity. One form of ID is a valid Iowa driver’s license with the voter’s current address. Hard-copy proof of residency –electronic copies are not accepted– can be accomplished with:

  •  Property tax statement
  •  Utility bill
  •  Bank Statement
  •  Paycheck
  •  Government check
  •  Other government document

A current photo ID that is valid and contains an expiration date can be used for proof of identity. Among valid documents are:

  •  Out-of-state driver’s license
  •  Non-driver identification card
  •  US passport
  •  US military ID
  •  ID card issued by employer
  •  Iowa high school or college ID

You can pre-register at the Dallas County Auditor’s office, 910 Court St. in Adel on weekdays between from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration forms can also be found online at the Dallas County Auditor’s website and at the Iowa Secreteray of State’s website. Mail completed forms to the Dallas County Auditor, 910 Court St., Adel, IA 50003.

Changing your name, party or address, if you are already registered within Dallas County, can be done any time up to and including Election Day. Prior to Election Day, changes are made by the same means as voter registration. On Election Day, changes may be made at your polling place. If your address has changed, you will need to go to your new polling site to make changes.

Polling locations for the Sept. 8 School Election

Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Community School District Polling Places: 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Vote Centers have been established. Eligible electors who live in the ADM School District may vote at any of the following locations:

  1. Adel Library: 303 S. 10th St. in Adel
  2. DeSoto United Methodist Church: 421 Dallas St. in DeSoto
  3. Minburn United Methodist Church: 705 Chestnut St. in Minburn

Perry Community School District Polling Place: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The polling place for all eligible electors who live in the Perry School District is:

  1. McCreary Community Building: 1800 Pattee St. in Perry

Van Meter Community School District Polling Place: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The polling place for all eligible electors who live in the Van Meter School District is:

  1. Van Meter American Legion: 910 Main St. in Van Meter

Waukee Community School District Polling Place: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Vote Centers have been established. Eligible electors who live in the Waukee School District may vote at any of the following locations:

  1. Waukee School Administration Building: 560 S.E. University Ave. in Waukee
  2. St. Francis of Assisi Church: 7075 Ashworth Road in West Des Moines

West Central Valley Community School District Polling Places: 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Note Times)

Vote Centers have been established. Eligible electors who live in the West Central Valley School District may vote at any of the following locations:

  1. Zion Lutheran Church: 309 Marshall St. in Dexter
  2. Menlo Community Building: 417 Sherman St. in Menlo
  3. Redfield American Legion: 1116 Thomas St. in Redfield
  4. First Congregational Church: 224 N. Division St. in Stuart

Woodward-Granger Community School District Polling Places: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Vote Centers have been established. Eligible electors who live in the Woodward-Granger School District may vote at any of the following locations:

  1. Emmanuel United Methodist Church: 1910 Locust St. in Granger
  2. Woodward United Methodist Church: 108 W. Fifth St. in Woodward
