Accujet is this week lining the sanitary sewer main along 30th Street in east Perry, using a technology new to the Perry area but well known for many years in Europe.

The process, described by Accujet owner Kyle Baxter of Perry, involves running a length of the resin-saturated felt liner along the sewer main. High-pressure steam is then forced into the liner, making it adhere tightly to the existing sewer wall and curing and hardening the resin.

“It’s like peeling off a sock, turning it inside out,” Baxter said.

The resin-soaked liner, looking like folds of pink taffy, is refrigerated until ready for use because heat starts the curing of the resin.

In effect, the process creates a new pipe — free of cracks and holes — inside the old pipe. A robot is then guided the length of the sewer main, cutting a hole for each house’s service line.

Baxter said the newly lined main should last at least 50 years. The lining process is cheaper and quicker than repairing or laying a new sewer main because there is no need to break up the concrete sidewalk in order to dig a trench. The liner can accommodate cracks, voids and displaced joints in the old main.

The total project cost to the city as $43,392.

The 30th Street project involves to 400-foot sections, Baxter said, but linings can extend as far as 3,000 feet. A shorter section of sewer main was lined in the 1300 block of Pattee Street.
