An Adel man is apparently in critical condition from head injuries suffered early Monday at the Booneville boat ramp access to the Raccoon River, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office.
Jesse Edwards, 27, was found lying in the roadway about 3 a.m. in the 27000 block of 360th street (County Road F90). Edwards was unresponsive when found and was air lifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Preliminary investigations by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office suggest the injuries were accidental, according to the statement.
Authorities are asking anyone who might have had contact with Edwards in the early morning hours Monday to contact the Dallas County Sheriff’s office at 515-993-4567.
Early reports said Edwards might have been the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Nicholas Clayton of De Soto, who has started a Gofundme page for Edwards, corrected the early reports.
“I apologize now for the misinformation,” Clayton said on the Gofundme page. “Jesse was not killed by a hit and run driver. I have since learned that he had an accident while fishing on Aug. 14. His cremation and service are paid for. So we are just trying to raise the funds to give him a nice headstone. Without help from his friends, he won’t get much more than a plaque. He had many friends and would do anything for anyone. So let’s repay Jesse for all his kindness and get him the stone he deserves.”
Mel Scearce of Minburn, another friend of Edwards, said she “knew him well from previous years working with him.” Scearce said she was able to supply the Dallas County Sheriff’s office with contact information for Edwards’ family.
“He was a great kid and had really made strides in his life,” Scearce said.
