An Adel man was arrested Wednesday after his pistol accidentally discharged, wounding himself and frightening his minor child nearby.
Adam Leigh Livingston, 45, of 1603 Aspen Dr., Adel, was charged with child endangerment.
The incident began about 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7, when an officer of the Adel Police Department responded to a report that a man “accidentally shot himself in the hand with a 9 millimeter hand gun,” according to court records.
The minor victim “was consoling her father on his bed downstairs” as “the father had been drinking vodka and had a handgun that was in his right hand,” according to court records.
When Livingston “set the gun down, the firearm discharged, firing one round that struck” his left index finger before “the bullet lodged in the mattress,” according to court records.
The daughter was not injured “but was put in danger by her father being impaired from the alcohol and having a loaded firearm that discharged in her presence,” according to court records.
Livingston allegedly told the officer “that he had drunk a pint of vodka,” and the officer “could smell the odor of alcohol coming off of his breath,” according to court records.
Livingston was transported to Mercy One in Des Monies for treatment of his injuries.
A warrant for Livingston’s arrest was ordered Nov. 9 in Dallas County District Court and served that day. Livingston was held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2,000 cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Nov. 18 in Dallas County District Court.
