Nearly two years after attaining tax-exempt status as a non-profit organization and refurbishing the former chiropractor’s office and beauty shop at 1211-1213 Lucinda St., the Alano Club of Perry was welcomed to membership in the Perry Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting Friday afternoon.

Larry and Pearl Laborde were hardly unpacked from their relocation from Santa Barbara, Calif., when they started their Alano Club project. The facility rents space to ongoing meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Some 30 Chamber members and friends of the Alano Club gathered for hot dogs, popcorn and a wide variety of sweets, with tours of the spacious and comfortable offices, meeting rooms, recreation rooms and the like.

According to its literature, “The primary purpose of the Perry Alano Club is to host 12 Step recovery programs. Our mission is to hold sober events for members of the Perry Alano Club and others associated with 12 Step programs and to be a safe place for those in 12 Step recovery to come and socialize.”

Meetings are held nightly at the Alano Club at 7 p.m. Additional meetings include noon meetings on Mondays and Fridays and a men’s meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
