Flashing the leather -- and swinging the big bats -- Sunday at Graves Diamond in Pattee Park were, kneeling, Candy Holcomb (left) and Tina Kenney. Standing, from left: Cheri Scheib, Maggie Gittins, Denise Niebuhr, Lila Robb, Lori Seeley adn Joelle Miner. Photo submitted.

A handful of Jayette softball alumni dodged the weather to have some fun on Paul and Mary Ann Graves Diamond in Pattee Park, site of much former — but unfaded — glory.

While the turnout was considerably less than the first “official” alumni game held the first weekend of June last summer, those who did bring their bats and gloves had just as much fun.

A pitching machine was provided, and each slugger ripped into a grocery cart of softballs, recalling the days when seeing-eye singles, frozen ropes down the baselines and deep drives into the gap brought the home crowd to their feet.

The All 70’s Reunion fun will continue Tuesday with the Independence Day parade. Steve Menz will have a flatbed float, which the Reunion Committee will be meeting Monday morning to determine how to decorate. Any alumni still in town — and those from the area, of course — are invited to ride along. Parade entries will begin lining up at the East Perry Plaza at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
