Veteran Iowa lawmaker Andrew Preston Varley of Stuart died early Monday morning. He was 83.

Veteran Iowa lawmaker Andrew Preston Varley of Stuart died early Monday morning. He was 83.

Varley was a Republican member of the Iowa House of Representatives from 1967 to 1979 and the Speaker of the Iowa House from 1973 to 1974.

The Stuart native earned a bacheloer’s degree from Iowa State University in 1957 and a master’s degree from North Carolina State University in 1961.

Varley married Marilyn Saucke in 1959, and together they raised four sons, Warren, Thomas, John and Curtis.

He was a member Iowa Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.

A lifelong farmer, Varley was a member of the Lutheran Church, Lutheran Laymen’s League and the Adair County Farm Bureau. He was a trustee of the Iowa State University Foundation Farms and past chairman State Extension Advisory Committee.

Varley’s eldest son, Warren Varley of Stuart, said Monday. “Rest in peace, Dad! You’ve done a lot. You deserve a rest. Enjoy your new home among the angels!”
