The Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International welcomed four grant winners — Elizabeth Marburger, Nicole Myers, Linda Huntington and Laurie Thompson — to their March meeting. They represented the recipients of $125 literacy grants the chapter awarded in December.

All spoke of the loss in literacy their students suffered during the previous year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and they expressed differing ideas on dealing with the loss.

Each grant winner related how she was using the funds. Marburger and Myers, representing the fourth grade team at the Perry Elementary School, told of a reward system they created to encourage students to read and demonstrate their comprehension of what they had read.

Huntington, a Perry kindergarten teacher, created at-home opportunities for her students to practice reading with their parents by giving each of them a book of their own at three times during the school year.

Thompson, a second grade teacher at North Ridge Elementary School in the Dallas Center-Grimes School District, crafted take-home kits for her students to practice reading and vocabulary skills.

All teachers in Dallas County were eligible to apply for up to $125 for supplies that would help them further literacy in their classrooms. The Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter, which is made up of women educators who live or work in Dallas County, strives to promote the professional and personal growth of women educators as well as to promote excellence in education.
