As growth explodes, Waukee issues 898 building permits in year

The population of Waukee grew 10.3 percent in 2018, the highest percentage of growth among Des Moines metro-area cities. The city’s estimated population is now 22,810.

WAUKEE, Iowa — The figures are in for fiscal year 2019, and the city of Waukee remains the pace setter in Dallas County for population growth and property development.

The Waukee Development Services Department issued 898 building permits in between July 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019. The taxable valuation of the FY 2019 building permits totaled $154 million. The city issued its highest July-to-June total for commercial permits at $61.9 million.

The breakdown of fiscal year 2019 permit totals included:

  • 188 for single-family housing
  • 61 for townhomes
  • 8 for multi-family housing
  • 26 for commercial projects
  • 615 other permits, such as additions, alterations, decks and similar

“About 40 percent of the valuation in this past fiscal year comes from commercial projects,” said Waukee Mayor Bill Peard. “That’s great news as commercial growth brings in new personal and professional services, retail opportunities, expanding dining options and more for Waukee residents and visitors.”

Some notable recent commercial constructions include the Palms Theaters and IMAX, Veridian Credit Union, Central Standard, Marco’s Pizza, Panchero’s, Great Clips, the I-80 West Industrial Park, IHOP and the start of Waukee’s new Fleet Farm store.

In addition to development, residential growth remained steady, with the city seeing a 10.3 percent population spurt in 2018, the highest percentage of growth among Des Moines metro-area cities. Waukee’s estimated population is now 22,810, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, making it the largest city in Dallas County.

  1. I wonder if Summer Evans would allow an interview to reveal the dollars surrendered via construction tax abatements?
