Barbara Hartz, 84, of Perry passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018, with her family by her side at her home in Perry, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Perry. Visitation will be Friday, May 25 from 2-7 p.m., with family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home and Cremation Care in Perry.

Barbara Jane Hartz was born Oct. 4, 1933, at Mondovi, Wash., to Clark and Rita Sabina (Forney) Nichols.

She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines and earned her Bachelor of Science degree and Master’s degree from Drake University.

Barbara was united in marriage to Marvin Richard Hartz at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines Aug. 7, 1954.

She taught special education at Perry High School and fourth grade at Perry Elementary School, serving the district for more than 30 years.

Barbara was a member of the United Methodist Church in Perry, PEO and Perry Retired Teachers.

She volunteered at the Carnegie Library Museum, sang in choir and was very active in church throughout the years.

In death she rejoins her husband, Marvin: parents, Clark and Rita Nichols; and a brother, Dwight Nichols.

Left to cherish Barbara’s memory are her three children, Jane Babcock of Urbandale, Bill (Jenifer) Hartz of Columbia, Mo., and Carol (Bill) Werner of Overland Park, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
