About 40 riders participated in Sunday’s Bike for Life Poker Ride, sponsored by the Relay for Life of Dallas County.

The bikers rolled out from the Raccoon River Valley Trailhead in downtown Perry at 9:30 a.m., with a reception awaiting them at their return.

Organizers of Sunday’s event included Fighting for Life Team members Gary Iles, Ken Elsberry and Kael Elsberry, 13, FCU Team member Tammy Wallace and Team Bookworm member Kathy Miller.

The group’s signature event, the fall Relay for Life, is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Perry High School. All proceeds from the Bike for Life support the Relay for Life of Dallas County, which celebrates the lives of cancer victims and survivors and funds cancer research.

The American Cancer Society sponsors the nationwide Relay for Life, which raises about $5 billion annually for cancer research. It is estimated there will be about 1.7 million new cancer cases diagnosed in 2018 and about 600,000 cancer deaths in the U.S.
