In the wake of last Thursday’s abrupt dismissal of St. Patrick’s Catholic School Principal Eddie Diaz, Bishop Richard E. Pates visited Perry Wednesday afternoon and met with a group of school staff members, parents and other concerned parishioners about the uproar over Diaz.

Accompanying Pates were the Rev. Michael Amadeo, vicar general of the Des Moines Diocese, and Tracy Bonday, superintendent of schools in the Des Moines Diocese.

Pates said he came to Perry to listen and would make no decisions until he reflects on what he heard from the group of about 20 parishioners.

In the course of the two-hour meeting at the Hotel Pattee, a petition with some 650 signature was presented to the bishop. More than half of the signers were members of St. Pat’s, and the balance were community members signing in support of Diaz.

Former St. Pat’s School Principal Doug Latham, whom Diaz succeeded in the role, has returned as interim principal. The K-8 school has an enrollment of about 120.
