Bluejay grapplers compete at Saturday tourney

INDIANOLA — Perry sent eight varsity members and a full junior varsity wrestling squad to the Indianola Tournament Saturday.

Waverly-Shell Rock made a long road trip pay off with a team win behind 172 points, with the host Indians second at 137.5. DC-G (108), Hampton-Dumont/CAL (69), Mason City (58), and Perry (33.5) were also in action.

Cole Nelson placed second at 126 pounds, the highest finish for a Bluejay. He won twice by pin, once by technical fall and once by major decision to see his record move to 11-2 after a 3-0 loss in the finals.

Jeb Stewart (152 pounds) was third with a 2-2 mark. He won by both major decision and decision, with Alan Gomez 1-3 in placing fourth at 285 pounds.

Keegan Snyder (160) was fifth with two wins by decision and three losses, with Ian Castellanos (120), Tanner Burgin (132), and Daniel Cornelio (138) all finishing fifth in their respective weight classes with 0-4 records.

Also in action for the varsity was Cayden Widen, who was sixth at 170 after an 0-5 record at the tourney.

Perry did not have entrants at 1-6, 113, 145, 182, 195, and 220 pounds.

Alex Arbuckle won his bracket in the JV tourney, with Anthony Tlaceca, Kain Killmer, and Kevin Collin each placing second while Juan Hernandez, Alex Fickbohm, Taylor Atwell, Angel Calderon, and Sebastian Robles all placed third.

Kyle Hernandez, Hunter McDowell, Robbie Mason, Jose Chavez, and Brian Hernandez were all also in action for the Bluejay JV.

Perry will wrestle Ballard and host Carlisle Thursday before completing the pre-holiday portion of their schedule by competing Saturday in the Waukee Duals.
