Perry's Anthony Chavez looks to spill Woodward-Granger's Charity Mickels in their 120-pound match Thursday. Chavez was one of 17 junior varsity wrestlers in action for Perry at Saydel Friday.

SAYDEL — Perry sent 14 Bluejays and a trio of Jayettes to Saydel Friday to compete in the Eagle Junior Varsity invite.

Varsity head coach Mark Weber said he was pleased with the overall results.

“Nothing is going to beat the experience of mat time, and that is what we got,” he said. “It was great to see some of guys get some wins, and others wrestled well, too. We had some matches that were real close, but then something happened real quick — like they do — and it turned into a loss. Those are kinds of matches we can learn from, and if we do those will be wins, not losses, when we get into those kind of matches later in the season.”

Hailey Peterson (98-102 pounds) was 0-3 and Martha Turrado (120-122) 0-2 while Taylor Atwell (109-113) was 1-2 with a forfeit.

The three girls are all freshmen, and Weber said he has been pleased with their efforts.

“They are all still learning out there, but they have the right approach and are willing to work, and as a coach that is what you are looking for,” he said.

Carlos Vargas was the lone grappler to finish 3-0 for Perry, with his wins coming on a major decision and two decisions.

Cori Alamina was 2-1 with a pair of pins, Rylee Ray 2-1 with a pin and a win by injury (time), Tucker Strough 2-1 with two decisions and Cayden Wilden 2-1 with a pin and a decision.

Anthony Chavez was 1-2 with a pin, Jose Chavez 1-2 with a win (6-4) in sudden victory I, Carlos Sandoval 1-2 with a decision, Leonard Jacobson 1-2 with a pin and Anthony Tlaceca 1-2 with a pin.

Pablo Calderon, Ian Castellanos, Sergio Gonzalez and David Muro were all winless for Perry in each of their three matches.

“The challenge now for us as coaches is that we have a wrestling room with some kids doing well, some starting to pick up wins and figure out what they need to do and others who are still learning or searching,” Weber said. “So it is a balancing act. Obviously you don’t want to hold others back, but you also need to give time to those who need it. We will continue to work hard, that is for sure.”

Perry hosts Carroll and Fort Dodge St. Edmond Thursday, then wraps the pre-holiday portion of their schedule Saturday at the Waukee Duals, where the team will compete five times.
