STORY CITY — The wrestling season opened for Perry Thursday at Roland-Story, where the Bluejays posted two team wins against one loss.
Perry dropped their opener, 47-30, to Gilbert, before bouncing back to claim a 39-36 victory over Kuemper Catholic. A 41-30 win over host Roland-Story capped the opening night’s action for Perry.
Kaleb Olejniczak and Zach Stewart were each 3-0 to lead Perry. Ranked fourth in 3A at 126 pounds, Olejniczak recorded a pair of pins and received one forfeit, with Stewart — wrestling up at 138 — winning by pin, technical fall and forfeit.
Justin Stammer was 2-0 at 145 with a pin and a decision, with Jered Narber 2-1 at 152, both wins coming via pinfall. Cole Snyder recorded two wins by decision to finish 2-1 at 170, with Alex Tapia 2-1 at 285, Riece Graham 1-2 at 106 and Rodrigo Guevara 1-0 at 113, each of those wins by forfeit.
Erick Funez was 1-2 with a victory by decision at 160 for the Jays, with Jacob Nelson claiming a win by decision and another by pin in posting a 2-1 mark at 132.
Three different Bluejays stepped onto the mat at 195, with Francisco Colon and Jonathan Silva each receiving a forfeit while Kade Killmer lost by fall. Cesar Ramirez (182) and Angel Escobar (220) wrestled three matches apiece, but neither were able to notch a victory, with Miguel Gonzalez (145) dropping his one match.
Perry will compete Saturday at the Dan Hill Invitational in Harlan and will then entertain Montezuma, Ogden and Woodward-Granger in a rare Tuesday quadrangular.
