WINTERSET — Defending 2A state runner-up Perry has opened their 2015 boys soccer season with a 3-1 mark thanks to a 2-0 blanking of host Winterset in a Raccoon River Conference tilt Tuesday.

The Bluejays (3-1, 1-0) were coming off a 2-1 effort Saturday in tournament play at Dewey Field. They wasted little time moving the scoreboard Tuesday as Jesus Rodriguez stretched the nylon off an Ivan Garcia assist in the first minute.

The Huskies had a chance to tie the game and receive an emotional lift late in the first half, but Perry senior goalie Jorge Soto lived up to his stingy reputation by diving to his right to turn aside a penalty kick. Soto, the team captain, was instrumental in Perry’s run to the title game last spring and has started the ’15 season where he left off last year.

“Jorge came up big for us, but we have come to expect it from him,” Perry assistant coach Nathan Krohn said. “He stopped what would have been a big moment for them and turned it into a big play for us.”

No. 3 Perry’s win was cemented in the 77th minute when Jaime Diaz split a wall of defenders on a free kick with a blast that flashed into the back of the goal.

Diaz now has two goals on the season and Rodriguez four. The play of Rodriguez, in particular, had caught Krohn’s eye.

“I am really impressed with how he is playing to start the year,” the coach said. “We are looking for him to be our main scoring threat in the first part of the season.”

Perry began their season with a 1-0 loss to Southeast Polk in the Bluejay Tournament at Dewey Field Saturday, but quickly bounced back to blank Lewis Central, 6-0.

Six different Jays scored against the Titans, beginning with Javier Miranda’s goal off a Garcia assist in the second minute. Garcia scored off a free kick in the 19th minute, with Diaz finding the net in the 26th minute and Rodriguez in the 28th for a 4-0 Perry lead at the break.

Cameron Martinez beat the keeper on a free kick in the 58th minute for a 5-0 Bluejay lead, with Jeffery Guitterez splitting the posts a minute later to cap the scoring.

Perry finished the day with a 2-0 win over Des Moines North as Rodriguez found the net once in each half.

His goal in the 23rd minute came off a Fernando Catalan assist, with Rodriguez scoring with a header off a perfectly-place Chance Webster pass in the 39th minute.

Perry visits Carlisle Thursday, with the JV game to start at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity at approximately 7 p.m. Both Perry squads will host Des Moines Hoover Friday for a co-ed twinbill, with the Jayette game to being at 5:30 and the Bluejay match following.
