Six starters return for the Jayettes, who can no longer be penciled in as an "automatic win" on any team's schedule.

CARLISLE — The Perry soccer teams split a boys/girls doubleheader here Thursday, with the third-ranked Bluejays streaking to a 9-0 win after the Jayettes suffered a tough 2-1 loss in overtime.

The Perry boys improved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in RRC play thanks in large part to four goals before 20 minutes had elapsed.

Jesus Rodriguez scored in the fifth minute before making it 2-0 in the 13th minute off an Ivan Garcia assist. Garcia assisted on Jaime Diaz’s goal three minutes later, then assisted on a Jeanluca Sirgosi goal two minutes after that as Perry surged to a 4-0 lead.

Garcia split the pipes in the 43rd minute, with Alvaro Soto finding the back of the net in the 52nd minute Ian Velasco beating the keeper in the 61st minute to push the margin to 7-0. Goals in the final two minutes of play from German Alvarenga and Rob Horgosi capped the scoring.

Velasco and Cameron Martinez helped lead a strong defensive effort, with goalie Jorge Soto recording his fourth shutout of the season.

The Jayettes (0-2, 0-2) forced overtime when Sydney Guerra scored her first varsity goal, but the Wildcats were able to slip a shot past the Perry keeper in overtime to steal the 2-1 win.

Both teams will be in action at Dewey Field Friday against Des Moines Hoover. The Jayettes will play first, beginning at 5:30 p.m., with the Bluejay game to follow.
