Bluejays dominate All-RRC soccer teams

The Perry boys, who are outright Raccoon River Conference champs for the second consecutive season, had eight players recently earn All-RRC status.

Raccoon River Conference champions Perry landed eight players on the boys All-RRC soccer teams. The recently revealed lists also named Bluejay coach Gary Overla — who has led Perry to consecutive outright titles and six crowns in 12 seasons — was named Coach of the Year.

Named to the First Team at the midfield were David Cardenas and Ivan Garcia, who have 14 goals and 10 assists and 13 goals and eight assists, respectively, in overall play this season. Also selected for First Team status were defenders Ian Velasco and Alvaro Soto, who have each scored one goal and provided three assists this year. Cardenas, Garcia and Velasco are seniors while Soto is a junior.

Sophomore goalie Anthony Aragon was named to the First Team. Perry outscored RRC foes 29-3 in regulation with Aragon posting five of his eight shutouts in RRC play.

Earning Second Team spots were junior forward Jesus Rodriguez (15 goals, three assists) and junior defender Alexis Macias (one goal, three assists) while sophomore defender Miguel Gonzalez was chosen for Honorable Mention status.

Perry (14-3), ranked ninth in Class 2A, will host South Tama County (9-9) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Trojans were 7-1 winners over visiting CMB Monday. In the other side of the bracket, No. 6 Hudson (14-2) will host Grinnell (6-9) Wednesday after the Tigers bounced Ballard, 1-0, Monday.

The Substate Final is scheduled for 12 p.m. Saturday in Hudson.
