Perry's Anthony Velasco (9), German Alvarenga (7) and David Cardenas (21) surround the ball while on the attack against Indianola at Dewey Field Friday.

Visiting Indianola gave Perry a strong test for 40 minutes, but the Bluejays awoke after the intermission to score four times in the second half and claim a 5-1 non-conference victory.

The Indians (3-11) surprised the Bluejays (14-3) with a goal just four minutes into the contest on a blast from nearly 30 yards out that blew past goalie Anthony Aragon on a sharp angle and found the far corner of the goal.

Alexis Macias scored for the first time this season when he converted off an Alvaro Soto corner kick in the 23rd minute to send the game into the break tied at 1-all.

“The first half of this game was not played very well as our offense was out of shape and we didn’t have players in the correct position in order to score,” Perry head coach Gary Overla said. “It seemed as though we were constantly chasing the game.

“The second half was completely different,” he continued. “At halftime we told the kids to relax, enjoy the game, let it come to them and just have some fun. I think the results show we did just that. We were able to finish, capitalize and move the ball while maintaining possession.”

Jesus Rodriguez scored an unassisted goal in the 48th minute to put Perry in front, 2-1, then scored in the 68th minute from directly in front of the goal off a Soto assist for a 3-1 Bluejay lead. The goal was the team-leading 15th for Rodriguez while the assist was the third of the season for Soto.

Ivan Garcia scored into a wide-open goal off a Chance Webster assist just three minutes later, with Garcia lofting a corner kick that David Cardenas converted four minutes after Perry’s fourth score for a 5-1 advantage. Cardenas now has 14 goals on the year and Garcia 13, with Garcia raising his assist total to eight and Webster his total to five.

“It was Senior Night and I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our seniors,” Overla said. “They have been a huge part of the success of this program and have helped maintain (and perhaps even expand upon) our expectations of excellence.

“Good luck and best wishes to the following young men: Ivan Garcia, Jeffrey Gutierez, David Cardenas, Humberto Hernandez, Chance Webster, Fernando Catalan, Ian Velasco and Manuel Molina,” he continued. “Good luck gentlemen, and may you experience success and good fortune in all you do. Thank you for your time, your dedication, and your efforts. You will always be Bluejays and are always welcome back to the fold. However, before we say goodbye, let’s finish some business with this season.”

The quest to do just that will begin Wednesday at Dewey Field when Perry hosts the winner of Monday’s Class 2A Substate 7 game between CMB and host South Tama. The semifinal will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a win sending Perry to Hudson for a 12 p.m. Substate Final May 28.
