A bomb threat at the Adel-De Soto-Minburn middle and high schools caused classes to be cancelled Friday as local law enforcement searched the building for a possible explosive device.

None was found.

A threatening note was found “outside the building this morning prior to school,” said ADM Superintendent Greg Dufoe, who in an abundance of caution sent the following message to parents with children in the school:

Good Morning –

I would like to update you all on our threat issue at the MS/HS campus. A bomb threat note was found outside the building this morning prior to school. We implemented our crisis management plan – including evacuating students and staff. The Adel Police Department, along with the Dallas County Sheriff, State Fire Marshal and the Waukee Police Department, searched the building thoroughly.

Nothing was found of any concern at all during the search.

The law enforcement agencies will be investigating further. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, please contact the Adel Police Department at 993-6723, or Lee Griebel, high school principal at 993-4584. Kim Timmerman, middle school principal, at 993-3490.

With guidance from the Adel Police Department, school will remain in session at Adel Elementary and De Soto Intermediate. There was never any indication of a threat for those buildings, and that remains the case. Dismissal procedures will run as scheduled. If you have any concerns, please contact the building principals.

I am so sorry for this situation and for the anxiety and fear it can create. We appreciate the excellent response by our staff and the support of the local law enforcement agencies.

Please feel free to contact me directly via email or at 993-4283.

Sincerely,
Greg Dufoe

Only classes at the ADM High School and Middle School were evacuated. The De Soto Intermediate School and Adel Elementary School remained in session.

“There was never any indication of a threat for those buildings, and that remains the case,” Dufoe said.

Adel Police Chief Gordy Shepherd said agents of the State Fire Marshal’s office used a bomb-sniffing dog to search the building.

“A thorough search was conducted of the building and grounds, where no explosive device or material was found,” Shepherd said. “Evidence was collected by our department and will be processed by the state crime lab.”

He said law enforcement seeks “to find out the author of the note and identify all involved in this terrorism threat.”

Shepherd said anyone with information about the incident should call the department’s non-emergency number 515-993-6723 in order to speak with an officer. All callers may remain anonymous, he said.

The PerryNews.com will update this story as information becomes available.

  1. Needed are security cameras inside and outside of school buildings. Also security metal detectors at doors for any type of weapons. Limit what doors are for entry. I’m sorry but this is what our world’s come to. We need to make sure our students are safe and people are safe at school and sports activities.
