Booneville ice cream social satisifies faithful feeders

The homemade ice cream at the Boonville ice cream social was served in vanilla and chocolate flavors.

I often think that my mailman Rick Pentico abides by the old motto, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

Such is the case for Dan Haymond and me in regard to area ice cream socials and church dinners.

Maybe our motto is, “Neither floods nor tornadoes nor closed roads will stay these diners from a hearty meal.” Our most recent adventure in floksy dining at a summer ice cream social held Sunday evening at the Booneville United Methodist Church in Booneville, an unincorporated, hilly town just west of Waukee.

The weather was not the greatest. It rained all the way to the event ,with ditches in the country full of water and waiting to spill over onto the highways.

As many of ThePerryNews.com’s readers know, the Booneville United Methodist Church has been hosting this event for decades. Dan and I have attended for several years. I asked some older people working at the event when it first occurred, and none of them could remember a time when the ice cream social was not held.

I am sure this is an old tradition, dating back into fond memories of the past and Americana.

I asked one of the servers what the money raised was going to be used for. According to the Ladies Group, it was going for various mission projects.

The event was packed. There were all kinds of pies and cakes available, and homemade ice cream was on hand. There was vanilla and chocolate. Dan and I both tried both and were very pleased.

I also had angel food cake and cherry pie, equally satisfying indulgences.

We headed back home and, believe it or not, I stopped at Arby’s to have a sandwich. Life is uncertain at the best of times, so I like to east dessert first and then the meal.

There will be other ice cream socials coming up. The Minburn United Methodist Church should be having one this month, and we know the Rippey United Methodist Church will host a second event in September. The Linden United Methodist Church should also be hosting their annual event.

Keep watching for future reviews.
