VAN METER — Class 2A No. 12 Van Meter posted a 62-35 win over Woodward-Granger to complete a WCC girls hoops season sweep. The Bulldogs (14-2, 10-1) had previously defeated the Hawks (1-11, 1-10) by a 62-31 margin Dec. 11.
“We didn’t handle their pressure and pace of play well enough to get good shots and when we did we were not able to finish enough of them,” W-G head coach Gary Dresback said. “We were 9-of-35 from the field and 14-of-35 from the free throw line. It was encouraging that we were aggressive enough to get to the line for 35 attempts, however, you have to convert more than 14 of them if you want to be in the game.”
Van Meter led, 14-8, after one frame but opened a 29-12 halftime lead that swelled to 46-20 after 24 minutes of play.
Mary Hansen had 14 points, Riley Kirton six, Kendra Husmann four and Kayley Dresback three for the Hawks, with Alyssa Bice, Kaitlyn Peters and Maggi Mallon adding two points apiece and Riley Jamison and Miranda Aunspach one point each.
Hansen and Bice had five rebounds apiece, Kirton and Mallon four boards each and Dresback three, with Dresback also recording two steals and two assists.
Mackenzie Roberts had 26 points, five rebounds and four assists for the hosts, with Emily Roberts adding 14 points and three assists and Chelsea Bright six points. C.J. Jones had 20 points in the first meeting, but was held to five points, four assists and three steals in the rematch while Ellie Folkerts had four points, five boards, four assists, three steals and three blocks to join the statistical leaders for the home team.
W-G visits Ogden tonight before playing host to Madrid Friday.
