Charred debris from the April 19 fire that ripped through an alleyway garage at the rear of 1718 Willis Ave. in Perry rekindled Thursday afternoon shortly before 5 p.m.

Firefighters with the Perry Volunteer Fire Department responded and quickly extinguished the burning pile of wood, roofing and other rubbish.

Perry Volunteer Fire Department First Assistant Fire Chief Brian Eiteman said it was less likely that the debris spontaneously rekindled six weeks after first burning than that someone was seeking to burn the debris rather than haul it away.

Such open burning would violate both the city ordinance against nuisance burning and a state law against the burning of treated lumber, Eiteman said.

Officers of the Perry Police Department also responded and controlled traffic on Willis Avenue for the duration of the fire department action, which was complete by about 5:30 p.m.
