Class 2A No. 10 Newton blanked Perry for the second time this season with a 7-0 plastering of the Jayettes at Dewey Field Friday.

The Cardinals (6-1) had defeated the Jayettes (5-5) by a 4-0 score at the Newton Tournament April 16 and won again Friday in much the same fashion — with a blistering second-half attack.

In the first meeting between the teams Newton took a 1-0 lead into the intermission before adding three scores in the second half. Friday’s game followed a similar script, as the Cardinals turned a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes into a 7-0 victory.

Perry was without leading scorer Natalie Martinez, who is temporarily out with an ankle injury. The Jayette offense tried to make do, with KC Gafkjen and Grace Marburger firing shots on goal in the first half, with Haley Vaughn, Mariah McNamara and, as the game progressed, Sydney Guerra stepping up to try and generate pressure on the Cardinal defense.

However, Newton was having little of that, and used what appeared to be a decided edge in speed to full advantage. The guests regularly connected on passes of 20-30 yards in length, stretching — and eventually wearing down — the Perry defense.

Jayette goalie Amparo Menendez made at least six saves in the first half, with two of her first three stops excellent plays that denied what looked to be sure scores before the Perry senior intervened.

Newton got on the board in the 21st minute when Victoria Jordan — who had entered the game only moments before — scored off a loose ball after a corner kick.

Taylor Shipley’s strike with three minutes left in the half gave the visitors a 2-0 lead and set the stage for a breakout assault after the intermission.

Newton was also a victor in the junior varsity contest, topping Perry by a 1-0 final.

Perry will host Ballard Tuesday for a Raccoon River Conference match that will be the only action for the Jayettes next week.
