NEWTON — H.A. Linn Field proved an unwelcoming host Friday for the Perry girls soccer team, who dropped an 8-0 decision to host Newton in a non-conference meeting.

The Jayettes were making their second visit of the season to Newton, having played in a two-game tourney there April 18. In their first visit, Perry fell to Des Moines Lincoln, 3-0, before bouncing back to defeat PCM, 2-1.

On Friday the Jayettes were faced with a far more difficult task, as the Cardinals, ranked 10th in Class 2A, were able to improve to 9-2 with the win, their eighth shutout of the season. Newton has yielded just five total goals in their 11 games.

Perry (4-7) played better as the game wore on and were able to mount something of an offense attack but managed just one shot on goal.

The Jayettes lost players Erica Tenold and goalie Amparo Menendez to ankle injuries, but both were expected to return to action Tuesday when Perry travels to Ballard. Menendez had eight saves in the contest before leaving with the injury.
