ADEL — The Perry girls may have finished sixth among eight teams at the ADM Relays Tuesday, but if was the attitude of the Jayettes that caught the notice of their head coach.

“The point total may not indicate it, but the girls did a great job of competing tonight,” Matt Hardy said. “Several girls had strong finishes to their races or legs. We still have a tendency to run in our comfort zone and need to learn to stress our bodies as we exert maximum effort; the feeling of discomfort is only temporary, but the satisfaction of winning lasts forever.”

To the surprise of none, a powerful Waukee squad ran off with the team victory after posting 161 points. Boone was a competitive second with 133 points, with ADM (113), Madrid (65), Ankeny Centennial (40), Perry (31), Des Moines North (30) and Van Meter (13) in tow.

Freshman  Grace Stewart placed in both distance races, crossing third in the 3000 in 12 minutes, 20.07 seconds and sixth in the 1500 in 5:45.51.

Emma Olejniczak had a strong outing, placing fourth in the 800 in 2:41.79 and running on two third-place relays, the 4×400 (4:35.12) and 4×800 (10:47.85). She was joined by Breanna Penenger on both relay squads, with Johanna Diw and Maggie Lowe part of the former and Sidney Vancil and Haileigh Kenyon part of the later.

Kenyon and Vancil were also part of the fifth-place 4×200 team (2:02.29) that also included Amy Marckres and Claire Marburger, with Lowe fifth (in 1:06.09) and Diw sixth (in 1:08.97) in the 400.

Perry also received a sixth-place point in both throwing events, with Marckres spinning the discus 82 feet, 7 inches while Taylor Lathrum shoved the shot put 32’3-1/2.

The Perry girls will visit the Ballard Invite Friday before joining their Bluejay schoolmates at the North Polk Relays May 5.
