The Feb. 5 Raccoon River Conference basketball games between visiting Winterset at Perry have been declared “Coaches vs. Cancer” contests.

As part of the recognition of the ongoing fight against cancer, fans from both schools have been asked to wear white as part of a “Whiteout to Block-Out Cancer” campaign.

Relay for Life will sponsor a dinner, with all proceeds going to the fight against cancer. A $1 “Wall of Remembrance” will be in place, with fans asked to observe silence during the first minute of both games played in conjunction with efforts to “Silence Cancer.”

There will be a (as yet unnamed) special speaker between games, with a “48-Second Drill” bucket brigade held to raise additional funds. Coaches from all teams will wear sneakers in support of “Suits & Sneakers” for cancer awareness, with a building-wide “Jeans Day” for PHS staff Jan. 27 with money donated to Relay for Life and special event t-shirts will be available, with Relay for Life receiving those funds.

Fans who have been directly affected by cancer and those who have a loved one affected by cancer will be recognized, along with guests invited by team members directly affected.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.

Because cancer has touched so many of our nation’s basketball coaches, Coaches vs. Cancer offers them the unique opportunity to fight the disease. Through integrated fundraising activities and public awareness campaigns, participating coaches are truly making a difference in the fight against cancer and are raising awareness in their communities about the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and making healthy lifestyle choices.
