Collisions multiply in Perry area Tuesday, Wednesday

A red Cadillac struck a blue Ford pickup about 4 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of 18th Street and Willis Avenue.

Tuesday’s rain and wind were the conditions for several Perry-area collisions.

At about 4 p.m. Tuesday, a 2006 Cadillac, registered to and driven by Charles John Smith, 79, of 2115 First Ave. in Perry, collided with a 2019 Ford pick-up, registered to and driven by Ricardo Astulias Castillo, 25, of 1212 Fifth St. in Perry.

According to the report by the Perry Police Department, Smith was traveling southbound on 18th Street and was stopped at the intersection of Willis Avenue and was waiting to continue southward on 18th Street.

A second vehicle, not involved in the collision, was also traveling southbound on 18th Street and was also stopped at Willis Avenue “in the turning lane,” according to the report.

Castillo’s vehicle was traveling eastbound on Willis Avenue.

“It appeared that the uninvolved car began to turn westbound onto Willis Avenue at the same that” that Smith’s vehicle “started into the intersection, traveling southbound,” according to the police report.

Castillo’s vehicle was struck “on the driver’s side broadside” by Smith’s vehicle, causing Castillo’s truck “to spin around 360 degrees, facing westbound in the middle of the street.”

Smith’s Cadillac “ended up facing eastbound on Willis between the curb and” Castillo’s truck.

No injuries were reported. Damage to Smith’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000, and damage to Castillo’s vehicle was estimated at $4,000.

Smith was issued a citation for failure to obey a stop sign.

Also on Tuesday, a GMC pickup truck sustained serious damage, including a smashed windshield and detached side-view mirror, after striking a deer near the Saylorville exit on Iowa Highway 141 south of Granger.

It is unknown whether the driver of the pickup sustained any injuries. The stricken deer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local public safety agencies responded.

At about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, a two-car collision occurred at Fourth and Estella streets.

No injuries were reported.

The circumstances of the mishap are under investigation by the Perry Police Department.

The Perry Police Department, Perry Volunteer Fire Department and Dallas County EMS responded.
