Commissioner of elections advises pre-registration for Nov. 8 vote

The Dallas County Commissioner of Elections announced Monday that absentee voting will begin Monday, May 7 for the June primary election. Visit the Dallas County Auditor's website for more information.

Dallas County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Gene Krumm today encouraged everyone wishing to vote in the Nov. 8 general election to register early if they are not already registered.

In order to vote in the 2016 general election, a voter must be registered, Krumm said. Voters may register on election day, but Krumm urged voters to register before Saturday, Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. in order to expedite the voting process at the polling sites on election day.

The auditor’s office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, Krumm said.

Voters can still register after the Oct. 29 deadline, but they will need to show more identification. Voters who vote absentee at the auditor’s office after the Oct. 29 deadline or who plan to register at their polling locations on election day will need to show both proof of residency and proof of identity. (Examples are below)

Proof of residency must be shown with hard copies only. Electronic copies are not acceptable. Proof of residency can be accomplished with:

  • Property tax statement
  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Other government document

Acceptable proofs of identification must contain a photo and include:

  • Iowa driver’s license
  • U.S. military identification
  • Out-of-state driver’s license
  • Employer–issued identification
  • Non-driver identification card
  • Student identification form an Iowa high school or college
  • U.S. passport

All forms of photo identification must be current, valid and contain an expiration date or list “none” as the expiration date.

Voters may cast absentee ballots at the Dallas County Auditor’s Office during normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office will also be open Saturday, Nov. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
