Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 5 for the 2018 primary election.

Dallas County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Julia Helm encouraged everyone Monday who wishes to vote in the June 5 primary election to register early if he or she is not already registered.

In order to vote in the 2018 primary election, a voter must be registered, Helm said. Voters may register on election day, but Helm urged voters to register before Friday, May 5 at 5 p.m. in order to expedite the voting process at the polling sites on election day.

The auditor’s office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 25, Helm said.

Voters can still register after the May 25 deadline, but they will need to show more identification. Voters who vote absentee at the auditor’s office after the May 25 deadline or who plan to register at their polling locations on election day will need to show both proof of residency and proof of identity. Examples are listed below.

One form of ID is a valid Iowa Driver’s license with a voter’s current address. Proof of residency must be current within the previous 45 days. Proof of residency must be shown with hard copies only. Electronic copies are not acceptable. Proof of residency can be accomplished with:

  • Property tax statement
  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Government check
  • Other government document

A current photo ID that is valid and contains an expirations date can be used for proof of identity. Acceptable proofs of identification must contain a photo and include:

  • Iowa driver’s license
  • U.S. military identification
  • Out-of-state driver’s license
  • Employer–issued identification
  • Non-driver identification card
  • Student identification from an Iowa high school or college
  • U.S. passport

All forms of photo identification must be current, valid and contain an expiration date or list “none” as the expiration date.

Voters may register at the Dallas County Auditor’s Office, 210 N. 10th St. in Adel on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Registration forms can also be found on the Iowa Secretary of State website. Send completed forms to: Dallas County Auditor’s Office; 210 N. 10th St. Adel, IA 50003.

If you are already registered to vote within Dallas County, changes to your name, party and address may be made any time up to and including the June 5 election day. Prior to election day, changes are made by the same means as voter registration. On election day, changes may be made at your polling place. If you have changed your address, you will need to go to your new polling site to make all changes.

Voters may cast absentee ballots at the Dallas County Auditor’s Office during normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 7 through Monday, June 4.

All requests for ballots to be mailed must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, May 25. Completed absentee ballots must be postmarked by midnight the day prior to the election (June 4) or may be delivered to the Dallas County Auditor’s Office before the polls close at 9 p.m. on election day.
