Counselors needed for health insurance information program

Medicare and related health insurance can be confusing.

What are my options? What will it cost? If I’m still working, do I have to sign up for Medicare?

Trained SHIIP volunteers can help answer these and many other questions. The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) is a free health insurance counseling service of the State of Iowa Insurance Division.

SHIIP is looking for individuals who want to help in Dallas County.

Who makes a good SHIIP counselor? If you enjoy tackling new challenges and  learning new information, if helping people satisfies you, if you have good computer skills, if you can be an objective and trusted source of information — if you fit this bill, then SHIIP might be the volunteer experience for you.

SHIIP provides excellent training and resources to assure all SHIIP counselors are prepared and have the tools they need for successful counseling and community education.

The local SHIIP office is located at 25747 N Ave. in rural Adel, the site of the former Dallas County Home and now called the Human Services Campus. SHIIP volunteers typically help one day a week.

For more information about becoming a SHIIP volunteer counselor and to get a copy of the job description, call Kris Gross at 515-281-6867 or email shiip@iid.iowa.gov.

Ann Cochran is the Health Navigation Coordinator at the Dallas County Public Health Department.
