One cow was killed and at least one other was at risk of injury or death early Monday after they escaped their enclosure and wandered into the roadway of the U.S. Highway 169 just south of 160th Street.

There were no injuries reported among the occupants of the vehicle that struck the cow about 12:45 a.m. Monday, but the vehicle sustained significant front-end damage, estimated at $6,000.

Emanuel Torrez of Perry, the driver, was issued a citation for no valid driver’s license and released at the scene.

Dallas County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the incident and made contact with a local livestock owner, who came and confirmed the identity of the victim.

The deputies tracked the wandering cow while also controlling traffic around the deceased beast, which came to rest in the northbound lane alongside much plastic debris from the damaged vehicle.
