A credit card skimmer was discovered Monday morning on a gas pump at a Jefferson gas station.

A credit card skimmer was discovered Monday morning at 9 a.m. inside a gas pump in Jefferson, the Jefferson Police Department said Monday.

A staff member at a local gas station found the skimmer and alerted law enforcement. The device was removed and will be sent to the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations ICAC Task Force to obtain forensic evidence, according to Jefferson Police Department Captain Heath A. Enns.

Enns said the device is installed by opening the front of the gas pump and attaching it inside the pump. He reminded motorists that the front of every gas pump should have a “Sealed” sticker on the front.

“If you are purchasing gasoline at any gas pumps in town, please pay attention to this seal,” Enns said. “If you see one that is broke, please contact the manager of the business as well as the Jefferson Police Department at 515-386-2136.”
