Even if you’re wearing your pajamas all day while sheltering in place, sooner or later you will still have to go to the grocery store or the pharmacy, so why not go in the high style — and help the local fire department in the process?
“Here’s your chance to be Corona couture!” said Deb Gilbert of Woodward. “Be the first on your block to sport a Crown Royal COVID-19 face mask and support the Woodward Fire Department at the same time!”
Gilbert, a 30-year staffer at the Woodward Resource Center, has put her sewing skills to work producing custom Crown Royal masks out of the trademark pouches that hold the popular blended whiskey.
She said the project took off after she made 60 regular fabric masks for family and friends and to donate.
“My brother had a Crown Royal bag,” she said, “and he said, ‘Here, why don’t you make these?’ So I did, and they turned out really sweet, so I wanted to do something special with them. I only had four. So I did a Facebook auction. Then people donated a ton more bags, so we started selling them for a $20 donation, and we’ve sold about 70 of them.”
All proceeds from the sale of the masks go toward supporting the Woodward Volunteer Fire Department.
Gilbert said she made another 20 Monday morning and has supplies enough for about 60 more, so interested parties are encouraged to buy now. The Crown Royal face masks are available at AJ’s and Casey’s in Woodward.
Gilbert also accepts PayPal and will ship if necessary, though local pick-up is referred. She can be contacted through her Facebook page.
The masks have three layers: cotton, interfacing and the Crown Royal bag, with a pipe cleaner nose piece that guarantees a snug fit and gold cord ties for a custom fit on your ears.
“Just tie to fit and then slip the cord over your ears after that,” Gilbert advises. “And if you have any Crown Royal bags you’d like to donate, I’ll make more!”
