Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholdt said his office received “multiple 911 calls from the campground located at Elk Rock State Park” about 2:30 a.m., with callers claiming “a verbal altercation between campers had escalated to the point a firearm was discharged.”

When law enforcement arrived, they found a woman with a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital “with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to be released later today,” Sandholdt said.

The sheriff said investigation revealed Keubler “returned to the the campground shortly after 2 a.m. and subsequently engaged in a verbal confrontation with a neighboring campsite.”

The alleged shooter “retrieved a firearm from his vehicle but was confronted by members of his party and a neighboring campsite. It was during this confrontation the firearm discharged and struck the female subject in the leg,” Sandholdt said.

Keubler was released from the Marion County Jail after posting $21,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in the Marion County District Court Aug. 10 for a preliminary hearing.
