Dallas County Freedom Rock topples in Saturday collision

The Dallas County Freedom Rock was struck by a passing motor vehicle shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, a day that will live in infamy locally.

Bowed but unbroken, the 18-ton Dallas County Freedom Rock fell on its north-facing Kinnick-Feller face shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday when it was struck by a motor vehicle that left the roadway on U.S. Highway 169 in Minburn.

The motorist sustained an ankle injury in the mishap, according to public safety radio traffic.

The circumstances of the collision are under investigation at this hour. Excessive speed appeared to be a factor in the mishap, according to an Iowa State Patrol Trooper on scene.

The Dallas County Freedom Rock was dedicated seven weeks ago in a solemn ceremony.

The Minburn First Responders, Minburn Volunteer Fire Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s office, Dallas County EMS and Iowa State Patrol responded to the incident.
